&SpecificimmuneresponsesbasedonantibodiesandspecificreactionsofT
lymphocytes(seechapteronimmunology).
Theresponseofthesedefensestoinfectionthusinvolvesthecorrelationofa
numberofdifferentmechanisms.Defectivedefensesmakeiteasierforan
infectiontotakehold.Primary,innatedefectsarerare,whereasacquired,sec-
ondaryimmunedefectsoccurfrequently,pavingthewayforinfectionsby
microorganismsknownas“facultativepathogens”(opportunists). &
