OpportunisticMycoses(OM)


&Opportunisticmycoses(OM)thataffectskinandmucosaaswellasinter-
nalorgansarecausedbybothyeastandmolds.Apreconditionfordevelop-
mentofsuchinfectionsisapronouncedweaknessinthehost’simmunede-
fenses.Candidiasisisanendogenousinfection.OtherOMsareexogenousin-
fectionscausedbyfungithatnaturallyinhabitthesoilorplants.Theseen-
vironmentalfungiusuallyinvadeviatherespiratorytract.Themostimpor-
tantareaspergillosis,cryptococcosis,andthemucormycoses.BesidesCandi-
daandotheryeasts,phaeohyphomycetesandhyalohyphomycetes,whichare
onlyverymildlypathogenic,canalsocausesystemicinfections.AllOMshave
aprimaryinfectionfocus,usuallyintheupperorlowerrespiratorytract.
Fromthisfocus,thepathogenscandisseminatehematogenouslyand/orlym-
phogenouslytoinfectadditionalorgans.Infectionfocishouldberemoved
surgicallyiffeasible.Antimycoticagentsareusedinchemotherapy.Inin-
fectedimmunocompromisedpatients,theprognosisisusuallypoor. &

Candida(Soor)


Atleast 70 %ofallhumanCandidainfectionsarecausedbyC.albicans,therest
byC.parapsilosis,C.tropicalis,C.guillermondii,C.kruzei,andafewotherrare
Candidaspecies.
