&Antigenvariation.Somebacteriaarecharacterizedbyapronounced
variabilityoftheirimmunogens(=immuneantigens)duetothegenetic
variabilityofthestructuralgenescodingtheantigenproteins.Thisresults
inproductionofaseriesofantigenvariantsinthecourseofaninfection
thatnolonger“match”withtheantibodiestothe“old”antigen.Examples:
gonococcicanmodifytheprimarystructureofthepilinoftheirattachment

fore,antibodiestothe“old”pilincannolongerbindtothe“new”pilin.
