ViralProteinSynthesis

ProductionofviralmRNA.InaDNAvirusinfection,cellularpolymerases
transcribemRNAinthenucleusofthehostcellfromoneorbothDNAstrands,
wherebytheRNAisprocessed(splicing,polyadenylation,etc.)aswithcellu-
larmRNA.Anexceptiontothisprocedureisthepoxviruses,whichusetheir
ownenzymestoreplicateinthecytoplasm.
Inviruseswithantisense-strandssRNAanddsRNAthetranscriptionofthe
genomicRNAintomRNAiscarriedoutbytheviralpolymerases,usuallywith-
outfurtherprocessingofthetranscript.
Insense-strandssRNAviruses,thegenomecanfunctiondirectlyasmRNA.
Certainviruses(arenaviruses,seep.462f.)areclassifiedas“ambisense
viruses.”Partoftheirgenomecodesinantisense(–),anotherpartinsense
(+)polarity.ProteinsaretranslatedseparatelyfromsubgenomicRNAand
theantisense-codedproteinsarenottranslateduntiltheantisensestrand
hasbeentranslatedintoasensestrand.
ViralmRNAisproducedforthetranslationprocess,basedonboththe
genomeoftheinvadingvirusandthenucleicacidalreadyreplicated.
