&Animportantaspectoftheintestinalinfectionsisthattheprimarygas-
troenteritisformsarecausedbytheviralstrains 40 and 41 ,whicharedifficult
toculture.
Adenovirusescanpersistformonthsintheregionallymphnodesortonsils
untiltheyarereactivated.
Diagnosis.Antibodyassaysinpatientserumarethemainapproachtakenin
respiratoryadenovirusinfections.Serologyisunreliableintheeyeandintes-
tinalinfections,sincehardlyanyantibodiesareproducedinresponsetosuch
highlylocalizedinfections.Itispossibletoisolatethevirusesthatcausere-
spiratoryinfectionsbyinoculatingcellcultureswithpharyngealmaterialor
bronchialsecretionandwithconjunctivalsmearsineyeinfections.Enteral
adenoviruses,ontheotherhand,arehardtoculture.Thebestapproachto
detectingthemisthereforetosubjectstoolspecimenstoelectronmicro-
scopy,enzymeimmunoassay,orpassiveagglutinationmethods.
Epidemiologyandprevention.Humansarethesourceofinfection.Suscep-
tibilityistherule.Generalizedcontaminationofthepopulationbeginsso
earlyinchildhoodthatadenovirusinfectionsplayamoresignificantrole
inchildrenthaninadults.Transmissionofrespiratoryadenovirusesispri-
marilybydropletinfection,butalsoassmearinfectionssincethevirusis
alsoexcretedinstool.Eyeinfectionscanbecontractedfrombathingwater
or,inthecaseofadenovirustype 8 inparticular,iatrogenicallyfrominsuffi-
