Thevirulencegenesofpathogenicbacteriaarefrequentlycomponentsof
mobilegeneticelementssuchasplasmids,bacteriophagegenomes,orcon-

betweenbacterialcellspossible.Regionsshowingahighfrequencyofviru-
lencegenesinabacterialchromosomearecalledpathogenicityislands(PI).
