Gram-positiveandGram-negativebacteria.Itdenotesamodeofcommuni-
cationbetweenbacterialcellsthatenablesabacterialpopulationtoreact
analogouslytoamulticellularorganism.
Accumulationofagivendensityofalow-molecular-weightpheromone
(autoinducer)enablesabacterialpopulationtosensewhenthecritical
celldensity(quorum)hasbeenreachedthatwillenableittoinvadethe
hostsuccessfully,atwhichpointtranscriptionofvirulencedeterminantsis
initiated.

Thevirulencegenesofpathogenicbacteriaarefrequentlycomponentsof
mobilegeneticelementssuchasplasmids,bacteriophagegenomes,orcon-
jugativetransposons(seep. 17 0ff.).Thismakeslateraltransferofthesegenes
betweenbacterialcellspossible.Regionsshowingahighfrequencyofviru-
lencegenesinabacterialchromosomearecalledpathogenicityislands(PI).
