rotaviruses.Inthetemperatezone,rotavirusesareimplicatedinfewerindi-
vidualinfections;heretheymorefrequentlycausewinteroutbreaksinhos-
pitalsandhomesforsmallchildren.Rotavirusesremainviableforlongper-
iodsonobjectsandskin(hands!)andarethereforespreadrapidlybyinfected
personsandhealthycarriers.Themosteffectiveprophylacticapproachisto
practicestringenthygiene.

ViruseswithSingle-StrandedRNAGenomes,
Antisense-StrandOrientation

SixviralfamilieshaveanantisenseRNAgenome:theOrthomyxoviridae,the
Bunyaviridae,theArenaviridae,theParamyxoviridae,theRhabdoviridae,and
theFiloviridae.JustlikeallotherRNAviruses,theyrequireaRNA-indepen-
dentRNApolymerase,whichentersthecellwithintheviralparticleinthe
infectiveprocess.
