andsolutematter(pinocytosis).Receptorsonthephagocytemembranein-
itiatecontact(Fig. 1. 6 ).Particlesadheringtothemembraneareengulfed,in-
gestedanddepositedinamembrane-boundvacuole,theso-calledphago-
some,whichthenfuseswithlysosomestoformthephagolysosome.Thebac-
teriaarekilledbyacombinationoflysosomalfactors:
