bysuccessivewavesofparasitemiacausedbyantigenicvariationinsucces-
sivetrypanosomepopulations(seeabove).Paralleltoanincreasingparasite-
mia,IgMantibodiesareproducedthataredirectedagainstacertainvariant
specificsurfaceantigen(VSSA)ofthetrypanosomes,whereupontheyelim-
inatethesegmentoftheparasitepopulationbearingthisVSSA.Theparasi-
temiathendeclines,butthetrypanosomeswithadifferentVSSAmultiply,
whereuponspecificantibodiesareonceagainproduced.Antigenvariation
isoneofanumberofstrategiestocircumventhostdefenses(immunoeva-
sion).AboutthetimewhenoneVSSAvariantoftrypanosomesisbeingelimi-
natedfromthebody,theconcentrationsofIgGantibodiesriseandimmune
complexesform.
