cellmembrane.Thepromastigotesquickly(within 12 – 14 hours)transform
intoamastigotestages,whicharefinallysurroundedbyaparasitophorous
vacuolewithinthephagolysosomeandreproducebybinaryfission.The
amastigoteformsarethenreleasedinaprocessresemblingexocytosisand
caninfectnewcells.
Clinicalmanifestationsandimmunology.Themostimportanthumanforms
ofleishmaniosesaresummarizedinTable9. 4 .Itisimportanttonotethatin
CLandMCLtheparasitesgenerallyremainrestrictedtotheskinorskinand
mucosa.CLlesionsmaypersistforlongperiods,buttendtohealsponta-
neously,whereasagreatertendencytodestructivechangesisseeninMCL
infections.Bycontrast,inVLtheleishmaniaorganismscaninvadetheentire
