isusedtodisinfectdrinkingwaterandswimming-poolwater(upto0.5mg/l).
Calciumhypochlorite(chlorinatedlime)canbeusedinnonspecificdisinfec-
tionofexcretions.Chloraminesareorganicchlorinecompoundsthatsplitoff
chlorineinaqueoussolutions.Theyareusedincleaningandwashingpro-
ductsandtodisinfectexcretions.
Iodinehasqualitiessimilartothoseofchlorine.Themostimportantiodine
preparationsarethesolutionsofiodineandpotassiumiodideinalcohol(tinc-
tureofiodine)usedtodisinfectskinandsmallwounds.Iodophoresarecom-
plexesofiodineandsurfactants(e.g.,polyvinylpyrrolidone).Whileiodo-
phoresarelessirritanttotheskinthanpureiodine,theyarealsolesseffective
asgermicides.
Oxidants.Thisgroupincludesozone,hydrogenperoxide,potassiumperman-
ganate,andperaceticacid.Theirrelevantchemicalactivityisbasedonthe
splittingoffofoxygen.Mostareusedasmildantisepticstodisinfectmucosa,
skin,orwounds.
Surfactants.Thesesubstances(alsoknownassurface-activeagents,tensides,
ordetergents)includeanionic,cationic,amphoteric,andnonionicdetergent
compounds,ofwhichthecationicandamphoterictypesarethemosteffec-
tive(Fig. 1. 8 ).
Thebactericidaleffectofthesesubstancesisonlymoderate.Theyhaveno
effectatallontuberculosisbacteria(withtheexceptionofamphotensides),
spores,ornonencapsulatedviruses.TheirefficacyisgoodagainstGram-pos-
itivebacteria,butlesssoagainstGram-negativerods.Theiradvantagesin-
cludelowtoxicitylevels,lackofodor,goodskintolerance,andacleaningef-
fect.

PracticalDisinfection

Theobjectiveofsurgicalhanddisinfectionistorenderasurgeon’shandsas
freeoforganismsaspossible.Theprocedureisappliedafterwashingthe
handsthoroughly.Alcoholicpreparationsarebestsuitedforthispurpose,
althoughtheyarenotsporicidalandhaveonlyabriefdurationofaction.
