BUGBEARS
Bugbears are born for battle and mayhe m. S urviving
by ra iding and hunting, they bully the weak a nd despise
being bossed a round, but their love of carnage means
they will fight for powe rful masters if bloods hed a nd
treasure a re assured.
Goblinoids. Bugbears are ofte n fou nd in the compa ny
of their cous in s, hobgoblins and goblins. Bugbears
us ually ens lave goblins they encounter, and they bully
hobgoblins into giving them gold a nd food in return
for serving as scouts and s hock troops. Eve n when
pa id , bugbears are at best unreliable a llies, yet goblins
a nd hobgoblins unde rs ta nd that no matte r how much
bugbears might dra in a tribe of resources, these
creatures a re a pote nt force.
Followers ofHruggek. Bugbears wors hip Hruggek,
a lesser god who dwells on the pla ne of Ache ron. In the
a bsence of their goblinoid kin, bugbears form loose war
ba nds, each one led by its fie rcest membe r. Bugbears
believe that whe n they die, the ir spirits have a cha nce
to fig ht a t Hruggek's side. T hey try to prove the mselves
worthy by defeating as ma ny foes as possible.
Venal Ambushers. Despite the ir intimida ting builds,
bugbears move with surpris ing stealth. They a re fond of
setting ambus hes a nd flee whe n outmatched. They are
de pe ndable mercenaries as long as they a re supplied
food, drink, a nd treasure, but a bugbear f orgets a ny
bond when its life is on the line. A wounded membe r of
a bugbear ba nd might be left behind to help the rest of
the ba nd escape. Afterward, tha t bugbear might help
purs uers track down its forme r compa nions if doing so
saves its life.
