MOLOCH
Exiled from the
Nine Hells, Moloch would
do anythingto reclaim his
position. Long ago, Moloch
earned hisplace among the other archdevils
through the glory
hewon driving demons out
of the Nine Hells. Asmodeusrewarded
him by elevating Moloch
to the rulershipof Malbolge.For eons,
Moloch ruled his domain,
vying against theother archdevils as he
sought still greater power.
Thisanimosity worked in
Asmodeus's favor, s ince
Asmodeusknew that Moloch
's scheming helped keep
the otherarchdevils
in check. The arrangement
began to unrave
l,how
ever, whe n Moloch took the ni
ght hag named Mal-agard
for his advisor. Her words
were poison, and grad-ually
s he convinced Moloch
to direct his efforts to toppleAsmodeus. Altho
ugh the conspiracy nearly
succeeded,it was thwarted.
Moloch was stripped
of his station andsentenced
to death-and
only the timely use of a planarportal allowed
him to escape.Moloch wasted no time
in preparing for h is return. He amassed
an a rmy of devils and
monsters and leftthem to mak
e final preparations for
invading the NineHells, while
he ventured to a distant
Material Plane inthe hope of finding an
artifact that would ens
ure hissuccess. While there,
he became trapped, leaving

armies
at the mercy of his enemies.
In short order theywere
destroyed.Now, Moloch
has been rendered nearly
powerlessafter his last failure.
He endlessly schemes
of ways toreturn to his forme
r status, but every
time h e enters theNine Hells, he is demoted
to an imp and can't regain
hisnormal powers until he
leaves. Thus, he lives a split
ex-istence, sometimes scheming
in Malbolge or other
lay-ers of the
Hells and at other times
wandering the planessearching
for magical might or secrets
that might helphim win back his title.Rumors suggest
that he can often be found
in S igil,where he bargains
with yugoloths to build yet
anotherarmy with which
he might invade Malbolge
and wrestthe throne
from Glasya. Bereft
as he is, he has little tooffer
in exchange, so he might
bargain with mortals togain
their aid in acquiring coin,
jewels, and other richesin return for knowledg
e about the Nine
Hells and theother planes. Most of Moloch's cultis
ts have switched allegianceto one of the other archdevils,
but idols construc
ted tohonor him s till stand in
deep dungeons, their jeweledeyes and the remnants
of power they hold drawing
mon-strous worshipers
and unwise adventurers
into placeswhere his foul influence
remains.
