TheRedbrands’baseinPhandalinisadungeoncomplex
underTresendarManor.Beforethemanorwasruined,
itscellarsservedassafestorageforfoodandwaterin
theeventthattheestatewasattacked,whileanadjoining
cryptprovidedarestingplaceforthedeceasedmembers
oftheTresendarfamily.TheRedbrandshavesince
expandedthecellarstosuittheirownpurposes,adding
slavepens,workshops,andbarracks.
IfthecharactersbegintheirsearchatTresendarManor,
theyenterthedungeoninarea1.Iftheyinsteadfollow
CarpAlderleaftothesecrettunneltheladfound,they
enterthedungeonbywayofarea8.


GeneralFeatures


Thehideoutconsistsofwell-builtdungeonchamberswith
flagstonefloorsandwallsofdressedstoneblocks.The
westernendofthecomplexislowerthantheeasternend,
withstairsleadingdownasthecharactersexplore.
Ceilings.Passagesandchambersare^10 feethigh
unlessotherwiseindicated.
Doors.Alldoorsaremadeofwoodwithironhandles,
hinges,andbuilt-inlocks.Theyareunlockedunlessthe
textstatesotherwise.larnoAlbrek(area12)andabugbear
namedMosk(area9)eachcarryanironkeythatcanlock
orunlockeverydoorinthecomplex.
Alockeddoorcanbepickedwiththieves’toolsanda
successfulDC 10 Dexteritycheck.Adoorcanalsobe
brokendownwithasuccessfulDC 20 Strengthcheck.
SecretDoors.An“S”ontheRedbrandHideoutmap
indicatesthelocationofasecretdoor.
Secretdoorsaremadeofstoneandblendinwiththe
surroundingwalls.Spottingasecretdoorfromadistance
ofnomorethan 10 feetwithoutactivelysearchingforit
requiresapassiveWisdom(Perception)scoreof 15 or
higher,whereasacharacterwhotakesthetimetosearch
thewallcanfindthesecretdoorwithasuccessfulDC^10
Wisdom(Perception)check.Secretdoorsswingopenon
hiddenironhingesandarenotlocked.
Light.Mostareasarebrightlylitbyoillampsinwall
sconces,refilledeveryfewhoursasneeded.

Ifthecharacterscharmorsuccessfullyquestionanyofthe
Redbrands,theycanlearnthelocationoftheirhideoutunder
TresendarManoraswellasthefollowingusefulinformation:


  • TheleaderoftheRedbrandsisahumanwizardknownas
    Glasstaff,sonamedbecausehismagicstaffismadeofglass.
    (OnlylarnoAlbrekandtheBlackSpiderknowGlasstaff’sreal
    name.)Glasstaff’schambersareinthewesternendofthe
    stronghold(seeareasHand12).

  • AmysteriousfigurecalledtheBlackSpiderhashiredthe
    Redbrandstofrightenoffadventurersandintimidatethe
    locals,forreasonsunknown.TheBlackSpiderhassent
    bugbearstoreinforcetheRedbrandsandprovideextra
    muscle(seearea9).

  • Thelowerpartofthecomplexisguardedbyahideous“eye
    monster”(seearea8).

  • TheRedbrandshaveahandfulofcaptivesinaholdingarea
    “neartheoldcrypts,”whichareguardedbyskeletons(see
    areas 4 and5).


1. Cellar


Anyexplorationofthemanorgroundsfindsitdeserted,
butwithplentyoftracksleadingtoastonestaircasejust
offtheemptyruinofalargekitchen.Atthebottomofthe
stairsstandsanunlockeddoorwithacellarbeyond.
Whenthecharactersopenthedoor,readthefollowing:

Thedooropensontoafive-foot-widelandingfifteenfeet
abovealargecellar,withstonestepsdescendingtothefloor
intwoshortflights.Anotherdoorstandsbeneaththestairsto
thenorth.Alargestonecisternoccupiesthewesternpartof
theroom,whosewallsarelinedwithkegsandbarrels.

Thisroomappearstobealargestoragecellar,exactly
thesortofthingonemightexpecttofindbeneathan
oldmanor.TheRedbrandswanttokeeptheirbase
ofoperationshidden,sootherthanthebarrelsfilled
withfreshprovisions,nothinginthisroomgivesaway
theirpresence.
Thebarrelscontainsaltedporkandbeef,flour,sugar,
apples,andale.Movingbarrelsaroundtothoroughly
searchthemisanoisyactivitythatattractstheattentionof
theRedbrandsinarea2.
Cistern.Thisrectangularreservoiriscleanandfilled
withcold,freshwater.Itis^10 feetdeepwitharim^2 feet
higherthanthesurroundingfloor(sothatthebottomof
thecisternis^8 feetbelowthefloor).Drainpipesfromthe
roofoftheoldmanorabovefillthecisternwithwater.
Awaterproofsatchelhangsfromasubmergedrope
attachedalongthesouthwallofthecistern,about^2
feetbelowthesurfaceofthewater.It’snotvisiblefrom
abovethewater,butcanbefoundwithasuccessful
DC 15 Wisdom(Perception)checkorautomaticallyby
acharacterprobingthecisternwithapoleorjumping
in.Thesatchelcontainssomevaluableitems(seethe
“Treasure”section).
SecretDoor.Asecretdoorislocatedinthesouthwest
corneroftheroom.Seethe“GeneralFeatures”sectionfor
moreinformationonsecretdoors.

Developments
Nomonstersorvillainsarefoundinthisarea,butthe
ruffiansinarea 2 takenoticeifthecharactersmakealot
ofnoisehere.Theycreepintotheroom,gainingsurprise
ifthecharactersdon’thearthem(see“Surprise”inthe
rulebook).Iftheruffiansfightinthisareaandtwoare
defeated,thelastruffianmightrevealthesecretdoorby
fleeinginthatdirection.

Treasure
Thesatchelhiddeninthecisterniswaterproofand
containsapotionofhealing,apotionofinvisibility, 50
gp,andacleansetofordinarytravelclothing.Thisisa
getawaykitthatlarnokeepshereincaseofanemergency.

2. Barracks


MostoftheRedbrands’humanmembershavelodgingsin
Phandalin.Thisbarracksisagoodplacetolielowafter
shakingdownlocalminersandfurtraders.
