Thisareaisthenorthendofalargenaturalcavern,butithas
beenfinishedwithdressedstoneblockwallsandaflagstone
floor.Severalbarrelsarestoredagainstthewallshere,along
withanumberofemptycrates,strawforpacking,hammers,
prybars,andnails.
Thecaverncontinuesforsomedistancetothesouth.You
canmakeoutseveralpassagesthatopenupoffthelarger
cavern,andwhatlookslikeadeeppitorcrevasseinthefloor.

Treasure
Mostoftheprovisionsandgoodsherearen’tvaluable,
butlyingamongthemarethirtybeaverpelts(2gpeach).
TheywerelootedfromacaravanontheTriboarTraila
fewdaysago.



  1. Crevasse
    Thecharactersarriveherebyoneofthreeroutes:the
    tunnelfromarea1,thestoreroomatarea7,ortherough-
    hewnpassagetothesouth,whichcontinuesoffthemap
    foraboutonehundredfeetandemergesfromatunnelin
    thewoodssouthofTresendarManor.Thepassageisan
    excellentwaytosmugglepeopleorgoodsinandoutof
    Phandalinwithoutbeingseen,andisthusperfectfora
    gangofslaversandthieves.


Acoldbreezefillsthislargenaturalcavern,carryingwithit
thefaintscentofdecayingflesh.Acrevassedividesthecavern
andisflankedbytworoughstonecolumnsthatsupportthe
twenty-foot-highceiling.Twoarchedwoodenbridgesspan
thechasm.

Bridges.Thesebridgesaremadeofwoodenplanksand
havenorails.Thesouthoneisriggedtocollapsewhen
acreatureweighingmorethan 50 poundsmovesacross
it.Acharacternexttothebridgecandiscernthatthe
constructionisfaultywithasuccessfulDC 15 Intelligence
(Investigation)check.Anycreaturecanuseanaction
todislodgeoneendofeitherbridge,droppingitinto
thecrevasse.
Crevasse.Thissteep-sidedfissureis 5 to 10 feetwide
and 20 feetdeep.Itsroughwallsareeasilyclimbed
withoutanabilitycheck.Acreaturethatfallsintothe
crevassetakes2d6bludgeoningdamageandlandsprone
inajumbleofrubblethatisdifficultterrain(see“Difficult
Terrain”intherulebook).
Thebottomofthecrevassefeelsunnaturallycold.When
viewedwithadetectmagicspell,theareaemanatesafaint
necromanticaura.Themagiccausesallorganicmatterin
thecrevassetoageanddecomposeathalfthenormalrate.
Currentlyheapedatthebottomamongbrokenandwell-
gnawedbonesisthehalf-eatenbodyofThelDendrar,
thewoodcarverofPhandalinwhowasmurderedby
theRedbrands.Theoutlawslefthiscorpsehereforthe
nothictofeedon.

Treasure
Thenothickeepsitshoardinabatteredwoodenchest
hiddeninacubbyholeatthebottomofthecrevasse,under
thenorthbridge.Thechestcan’tbeseenfromtheedgeof
thecrevasse,butisobvioustoanycharacterwhodescends

Theguardianofthiscaveisanothic—aninsane
subterraneanmonsterthathungersforflesh.Thecreature,
luredbyafaintmagicaleffectemanatingfromthe
crevasse,wasoccupyingtheareawhentheRedbrands
movedin.Iarnomanagedtostrikeabargainwiththe
monster,convincingittohelpguardthestrongholdin
exchangefortreasureandtheoccasionalgiftoffresh
meat.Still,thenothicisuntrustworthy.
Thenothiclurksnearthewestendsofthetwobridges.
Ifitnoticesintrudersenteringthecave,ithidesbehindone
ofthelargestonecolumnsandwatchesthem,attempting
touseitsWeirdInsight(seethecreature’sstatblock)to
discernthecharacters’secrets.
Thenothiccommunicatesusingtelepathy.Ifdetected,
itpreferstonegotiateandisn’tabovebetrayingthe
Redbrandsfortherightincentive,suchasthepromiseof
food.Whenroleplayingthenothic,considerspeakingin
whispersandthrowinginsomemadcacklesandbitsof
gibberish.Alsobesuretomentionthatthecreatureisn’t
actuallytalkingbutratherfillingthecharacters’heads
withitsfoulmurmuringsanddemandsforfood.The
