Statistics

Size
Eachcreaturetakesupadifferentamountofspace.The
SizeCategoriestableshowshowmuchspaceacreature
ofaparticularsizecontrolsincombat.Objectssometimes
usethesamesizecategories.

Mediumhobgoblinstandsina5-foot-widedoorway,other
creaturescan’tgetthroughunlessthehobgoblinletsthem.

SqueezingintoaSmallerSpace
Acreaturecansqueezethroughaspacelargeenoughfor
acreatureonesizesmallerthanitself.Whensqueezing
throughsuchaspace,thecreature’sspeedishalved.
Whilesqueezing,acreaturehasdisadvantageonattack
rollsandDexteritysavingthrows,andattackrollsagainst
ithaveadvantage.

Type
Acreature’stypespeakstoitsfundamentalnature.
Thefollowingtypesofmonsterscanbeencounteredin
thisadventure.
Aberrations.Utterlyalienbeingsthathavenoplaceinthe
naturalworld.
Beasts.Nonhumanoidcreaturesthat,likereal-world
animals,areanormalpartoftheworld’secology.
Dragons.Large,winged,reptiliancreaturesofancient
originandtremendouspower.
Giants.Humanoid-likecreaturesthattoweroverhumans
andtheirkin.
Humanoids.Bipedalpeoplesofthecivilizedandsavage
world,includinghumansandatremendousvarietyof
otherraces,includingdwarvesandelves.
Monstrosities.Frighteningcreaturesthatsometimes
resemblebeastsbutthatareoftentouchedbymagicand
almostneverbenign.
Oozes.Gelatinouscreaturesthatgenerallyhavenofixed
shape.Theyaremostlysubterranean,dwellingincaves
anddungeons.
Plants.Plantcreatures,asopposedtoordinaryplants,
havesomedegreeofsentienceandmobility.

Undead.Once-livingcreaturesbroughttoahorrifying
stateofundeaththroughthepracticeofnecromantic
magicorsomeunholycurse.

Tags
Acreaturemighthaveoneormoretagsappendedto
itstype,inparentheses.Forexample,anorehasthe
humanoid(ore)type.Theseparentheticaltagsprovidean
additionallayerofcategorizationforcertainmonsters,but
theyhavenobearingonhowamonsterisusedincombat.

Alignment


Acreature’salignmentprovidesacluetoitsdisposition.
Forexample,achaoticevilcreaturemightbedifficultto
reasonwithandmightattackcharactersonsight,whereas
aneutralcreaturemightbewillingtonegotiate.Alignment
indicateswhetheracreatureleanstowardlaworchaos
andgoodorevilorwhetheracreatureisneutral.
AnyAlignmentSomecreatures,suchasthewarrior,
canhaveanyalignment.Inotherwords,youchoosethe
creature’salignment.Dependingonthecreature,its
alignmententrymightindicateatendencyoraversion
towardlaw,chaos,good,orevil.
Unaligned.Manycreaturesoflowintelligencehaveno
comprehensionoflaworchaos,goodorevil.Theydon’t
makemoralorethicalchoices,butratheractoninstinct.
Thesecreaturesareunaligned,whichmeanstheydon’t
haveanalignment.

ArmorGlass


AcreaturethatwearsarmororcarriesashieldhasanAC
thattakesitsarmor,shield,andDexterityintoaccount.
Otherwise,acreature’sACisbasedonitsDexterity
modifierandanynaturalarmororsupernaturalresilience
itmightpossess.
Ifacreaturewearsarmororcarriesashield,thekindof
armoritwearsorshielditcarriesisnotedinparentheses
afteritsACvalue.

HitPoints


Acreatureusuallydiesorisdestroyedwhenitshitpoints
dropto0.Formoreonhitpoints,seetherulebook.

Speed
Acreature’sspeedtellsyouhowfaritcanmoveonitsturn.
Formoreinformationonspeed,seetherulebook.
Allcreatureshaveawalkingspeed;creaturesthat
havenoformofground-basedlocomotionhavea
speedof 0 feet.
Manyofthecreatureshereinhaveoneormore
additionalmovementmodes.
Climb.Acreaturethathasaclimbingspeedcanuseall
orpartofitsmovementtomoveonverticalsurfaces.The
creaturedoesn’tneedtospendextramovementtoclimb.
Fly.Acreaturethathasaflyingspeedcanuseallorpart
ofitsmovementtofly.Ifthecreatureisincapacitatedor
knockedpronewhileflying,itfallsunlessitcanhover.
Swim.Acreaturethathasaswimmingspeeddoesn’t
needtospendextramovementtoswim.
