20 to 30 feetabovethefloor.
Light.Areas 1 and 2 areoutside.Therestofthecomplex
isdarkunlessstatedotherwise.Theboxedtextforthose
locationsassumesthatthecharactershavedarkvisionora
lightsource.
Rubble.Areasofcrumblingrockandgravelaredifficult
terrain(see“DifficultTerrain”intherulebook).
Sound.Thesoundofwaterinthecavemufflesnoisesto
anycreaturesthataren’tlisteningcarefully.Creaturescan
makeaDC 15 Wisdom(Perception)checktoattemptto
hearactivityinnearbychambers.
Stalagmites.Theseupthrustspiresofrockcanprovide
cover(see“Cover”intherulebook).
Stream.Thestreamthatflowsthroughthecomplexis
only 2 feetdeep,cold,andslowmoving,allowingcreatures
toeasilywadethroughit.

WhattheGoblinsKnow
Ifthecharacterscaptureorcharmanyofthegoblinshere,the
goblinscanbepersuadedtodivulgesomeusefulinformation:
- Fewerthantwentygoblinscurrentlydwellinthelair.
- TheirleaderisabugbearnamedKlarg.HeanswerstoKing
Grol,chiefoftheCragmawtribe,whodwellsinCragmaw
Castle.(ThegoblinscanprovidebasicdirectionstoCragmaw
Castle.It’sabouttwentymilesnortheastoftheCragmaw
hideout,inNeverwinterWood.) - KlargreceivedamessengergoblinfromKingCrolafew
daysago.Themessengertoldhimthatsomeonenamedthe
BlackSpiderwaspayingtheCragmawstowatchoutforthe
dwarfGundrenRockseeker,capturehim,andsendhimand
anythinghewascarryingbacktoKingGrol.Klargfollowed
hisorders.Gundrenwasambushedandtakenalongwithhis
personaleffects,includingamap. - ThedwarfandhismapweredeliveredtoKingGrol,as
instructed.Thedwarf’shumancompanionisbeingheldin
the“eatingcave”(area6).

Thetrailfromthegoblinambushsiteleadstotheentrance
oftheCragmawhideout.
Followingthegoblins’trail,youcomeacrossalargecavein
ahillsidefivemilesfromthesceneoftheambush.Ashallow
streamflowsoutofthecavemouth,whichisscreenedby
densebriarthickets.Anarrowdrypathleadsintothecaveon
theright-handsideofthestream.
Thethicketinarea 2 isimpenetrablefromthewestside
ofthestream.
Developments
Thegoblinsinarea 2 aresupposedtobekeepingwatch
onthisarea,buttheyarenotpayingattention.(Goblins
canbelazythatway.)However,ifthecharactersmakea
lotofnoisehere—forexample,loudlyarguingaboutwhat
todonext,settingupacamp,cuttingdownbrush,andso
on—thegoblinsinarea^2 noticeandattackthemthrough
thethicket,whichprovidesthegoblinswiththree-quarters
cover(seetherulebookforrulesoncover).
2. GoblinBlind
Whenthecharacterscrosstotheeastsideofthestream,
theycanseearoundthescreeningthicketstoarea2.This
isagoblinguardpost,thoughthegoblinsherearebored
andinattentive.
Ontheeastsideofthestreamflowingfromthecavemouth,a
smallareainthebriarthicketshasbeenhollowedouttoform
alookoutpostorblind.Woodenplanksflattenoutthebriars
andprovideroomforguardstoliehiddenandwatchthe
area—includingapairofgoblinslurkingthererightnow!
Twogoblinsarestationedhere.Ifthegoblinsnotice
intrudersinarea1,theyopenfirewiththeirbows,
shootingthroughthethicketsandprobablycatchingthe
charactersbysurprise.Ifthegoblinsdon’tnoticethe
adventurersinarea1,theyspotthemwhentheysplash
acrossthestream,andneithersideissurprised.
Charactersmovingcarefullyorscoutingaheadmightbe
abletosurprisethegoblinlookouts.Haveeachcharacter
whomovesaheadmakeaDexterity(Stealth)check
contestedbythegoblins’passiveWisdom(Perception)
scoretoavoidbeingsurprised.Seetherulebookformore

Thickets.Thethicketsaroundtheclearingaredifficult
terrain,buttheyaren’tdangerous—justannoying.They
providehalfcovertocreaturesattackingthroughthem.

3. Kennel
TheCragmawskeepakenneloffoul-temperedwolvesthat
theyaretrainingforbattle.
Justinsidethecavemouth,afewunevenstonestepslead
uptoasmall,dankchamberontheeastsideofthepassage.
Thecavenarrowstoasteepfissureatthefarend,andisfilled
withthestenchofanimals.Savagesnarlsandthesoundsof
rattlingchainsgreetyourearswheretwowolvesarechained
upjustinsidetheopening.Eachwolf’schainleadstoaniron
roddrivenintothebaseofastalagmite.
Threewolvesareconfinedhere.Theycan’treach
targetsstandingonthesteps,butallthreeattackany
creatureexceptagoblinthatmovesintotheroom(seethe
“Developments”section).Goblinsinnearbycavesignore
thesoundsoffightingwolves,sincetheyconstantlysnap
andsnarlateachother.
Acharacterwhotriestocalmtheanimalscanattempt
aDC 15 Wisdom(AnimalHandling)check.Onasuccess,
thewolvesallowthecharactertomovethroughoutthe
room.Ifthewolvesaregivenfood,theDCdropsto10.
Fissure.Anarrowopeningintheeastwallleadstoa
naturalchimneythatclimbs 30 feettoarea8.Atthebase
ofthefissureisrubbishthat’sbeendiscardedthrough
