Soa massive thank you to St John!Andy Curtis, via email``````Hear, hear! St John were onsimilar sterling form at therecent London Marathon- they are true heroes.## EFFORT OVER TIMEI ran the Brighton Marathon thisyear and clocked 2:58:05 – myirst time under three hours. Many people have been quick tocongratulate me and most focus onthe time. But, for me, using time asa guide to a person’s running abilityis too simplistic and too manypeople focus on it. I believe mysub-3 marathon is someone else’ssub-4 or sub-5. The efort that weput in to be the best we can be is abetter judge of efort than time, andI have yet to meet a runner whoisn’t capable of being the very bestthat they can be. I have been (andcontinue to be) inspired by everyrunner I have ever met, so thank youfor helping me to my personal best.Ash Varley, via email## BROTHERLY LOVEOn December 23, 2017, I received aphone call to say that my brother, who is only 18 months older than``````LETTER OF THE MONTHNATURAL HIGHIn the June issue of RW, itwas mentioned that enjoyingthe natural beauty of thegreat outdoors can assistpostrun recovery by reducinginlammation after trauma hasoccurred to tissue. Having justreturned from Iceland with myboyfriend and another couple(we ran the Reykjavík SpringMarathon and Half Marathonwith them), I can conirm thatthis is absolutely true! After ourraces we toured Iceland’s‘Golden Circle’, taking in thespectacular natural beauty. Noneof us sustained an injury afterthis race, but I must say a longsoak in one of Iceland’s manynatural (and free) geothermalpools probably helped, as well!Yasmin Redmill, via email``````YOURWORLD``````‘Paris – beret, cocktail and bling!’- Nicole Amber Sumpter‘London was very hot, but a great day,as usual’ – Ian Love``````‘Southampton Marathon – very hotand hilly’ – Laura Praegar``````‘Yes! They are a fantasticplace to run, with tough climbs andstunning scenery, no matter whatthe weather. Sedbergh School lies atthe foot of the Howgill Fells and hasa rich history in fell running. FromJanuary to March, we train everyday and our Wednesday Epics seeover 100 pupils and staf runningacross the high fells in preparationfor the Wilson Run – regarded as thehardest school race in the country. If your readers wish to join us ona Wednesday Epic, we will matchthem to a suitable group and wouldbe pleased to show them around. They should get in touch by email:[email protected] Fleck (Headmaster),Sedburgh, Cumbria## A NOTE OF THANKSOn completing this year’s BrightonMarathon an unhealthy shade ofgrey, I decided to pop into the StJohn Ambulance tent for ‘a quicksit-down’. It turned out I was mildlyhypothermic and after an hour or soof being treated, I was free to wobbleof to bag collection. During thattime, I saw some of the outstandingwork the St John volunteers wereperforming on a constant stream ofsemi-conscious runners and realisedIT’S CR ATER THANYOU THINKYasmin (second fromleft) and friends
