THE WONDER of linocut prints is their oen deceptive simplicity. Each line tells its story
with a simple boldness, but it is only when we consider it closely – recalling the meticulous
act of carvingand observingthe intricate details – thatit becomes clear this medium hides
layers of complexity. It’sthe perfect way todepict the hills, whose true nature we discover
the closer we get. “When out hiking I findmyself visualising the landscapes in linocut,”notes
artist Isobel Buchanan. “is particular piece took 6 hours to carve; it evolved constantly
as I learned which marks worked to create the rocky outcrops.”
Isobel was struck by this sight when visiting the Isle of Skye. “e Cuillin Hills are
dramaticand powerful, littered with bareangular rocks and sweepinggullies – perfect for
lino printing.
“It is a sparse and desolate landscape but it has a beauty of its own.ere is something
ominous about this landscape: it exudes a foreboding feeling, and as soonas I saw it I knew
I wantedto print it.”
