8 MEETUP TIPS

FOR FIRST-TIMERS

Whether you want to keep fit, meet new
people or spend time in the outdoors,
here’s how to find new adventures on
Meetup.com

1 .Go onto the website and use their
search engine to see what hiking groups
are available in your local area.
2. See how often events take place and
how many members typically turn up for
hikes. It’s best if this number is relatively
high, or events could be cancelled.
3 .Some groups haveniches or themes.
These could be things likewalks by the
water, endurance hillwalking and hikes
for people who don’t likeearly starts.
4 .A few groups work nationally. For
example,AAA, Outdooraholics and
Backabush specialise in weekends away
up and down the UK. You can meet these
groups at an agreed location.
5. Joining a Meetup hiking group is
generally free and signing up takes
a few moments.
6. The day hikes start at around £5.
Members are responsible for any
transport costs involved (these are
sometimes included for a higher fee)
and bringing their packed lunch.
7 .Weekends away and international trip
cost vary greatly, so read the terms and
conditions of each group carefully.
8. Finally, if you feel nervous and unsure
whether to sign up, my advice is to try it
once. So many people end up having a
great day out and wonder whythey
were apprehensive in the first place.
