284 METHODOLOGICAL APPENDIX
RESEARCH METHODOLOGIES USED FOR ANALYSING TRADE AND RECYCLING SECTORS:
INORGANIC AND ORGANIC WASTE
Theme 2 and 3 concerned the trade and recycling sectors utilizing inorganic and
organic waste. For recycling and trade in inorganic materials, the main actors defined
were: recycling entrepreneurs, wholesalers, dealers, employees of the different enter-
prises, itinerant buyers, dump pickers, and street waste pickers (also households and
maids, but these were included in the survey for theme 1).
The main aspects covered in the study were:
- viability of the recycling activities at the enterprise/unit/individual level (costs,
prices, and turnover, profits); - volumes of raw materials recovered (and products made);
- forward and backward linkages between pickers, traders, and recycling units in
the commodity chain;
