offers all manner of treatments and ther-
apies. It also has a small spa that usefully
treats jetlag, at Bandaranaike International
Airport in the departure concourse.
Kanduboda Siyane
Meditation Center SPiRiTUAl RETREAT

duboda) This is a major centre for meditation
instruction in the style of the late Mahasi
Sayadaw. Accommodation and meals are
offered free of charge, though donations are
expected. Most meditators stay for an ini-
tial three-week training period, after which
they can meditate on their own for as long
as they like. Located 25km east of Colombo
in Delgoda, the Pugoda bus 224 passes the
centre and can be caught from the Central
Bus Station.

from high above the traffic in an open-top
double-decker bus. The narration is in Eng-
lish and snacks and water are included. The
four-hour tours cover the city and stops in-
clude the National Museum.

Duruthu Perahera REligiOUS FESTiVAl
(hJan) Held at the Kelaniya Raja Maha Vi-
hara on the January poya.
Navam Perahera REligiOUS FESTiVAl
(hFe b) On the February poya and led by 50
elephants; it starts from Gangaramaya Tem-
ple and is held around Viharamahadevi Park
and South Beira Lake.
oVesak Poya REligiOUS FESTiVAl
(hMay) The birth, enlightenment and the
death of Buddha is celebrated across Colom-
bo (and Sri Lanka) but the festivities around
Gangaramaya Temple and South Lake Bei-
ra are mind-blowing. Huge eruptions of
coloured light displays vie with hundreds of
smaller displays made by competing groups.
Dansala stands, where food and treats are
given away, are everywhere.
