steeringwheel-likestructures.Butthehistoriansseemtobeunclearaboutwhenwasthatfirst
cametouse.Earliermodelsofautomobilesusedaleverlikestructuretonavigatethemachine
knownasatiller.In1984,AlfredVacherontookpartinaracewithamodelthathadasteering
wheelattachedtoitanditisbelievedtobethefirsttimeasteeringwheelcameinuse.This
markedthestartoftheuseofthesteeringwheelsinthe1890sLavassorcarsusedthesteering
wheels.
C.RollsintroducedhiscarinBritainthathadasteeringwheelattachedtoit.Afather-sondual
introducedfirstcarsthathadafrontmountengineandasteeringwheelduringthetimewhen
thecarswitharear-mountengineandtillerweremass-produced.Butinayear'stime,thelater
onesalsoinstalledasteering wheelinsteadofatillerintheirmodelandbytheendofthe
decade,allthecarscamewithasteeringwheel.Themodelmadebythemhadawheelonthe
left-handsideofthecarandthesecarsbeingexportedtotheUS mostofthecarsthatwere
manufactured thereon were left-hand drive.
