Who said what?
You can place the people on
your FaceTime call in a grid view
and, with Spatial Audio, hear
the voice of the person come
from their respective position
on the screen. It’s witchcraft!

Enhance the sound
Voice Isolation and Wide
Spectrum sound have been
added to the FaceTime mic
options, so you can block out
all outside noise apart from a
voice, or open the floodgates
and let the ambient sound flood
into your call.

FaceTime’s biggest innovation yet, is
SharePlay. We feel isolated during lockdown –
we miss movie nights with friends, and listening
to music together. However, SharePlay lets you
incorporate these experiences into FaceTime.
You can listen to an album in Music together, or
create a new playlist that everyone on the call
can control – it’s like you’re in the same room!
This principle applies to streamed video
content too, choose to watch together and
everyone can view the content. It’s a feature
that stretches throughout iOS as you can switch
your ‘watch together’ video/call to Picture
in Picture mode, and then order a takeaway
through Safari. You can tap the top of the
screen to access your FaceTime controls at
any time, and AirPlay the whole thing to your
Apple TV to enjoy on the big screen. With a
PAI built for easy adoption, Apple hopes that
many developers will incorporate SharePlay
into their own apps to help bring their content
into FaceTime.
The last feature to be added to SharePlay
is Screen Sharing. With this, you can share
whatever is on your iPhone or iPad screen with
your call, so you can show off your gaming skills
or help someone out with their device.

learning to distinguish these sounds, block out
the ambient noise and prioritise your voice
to make it crystal clear. This means that dogs
barking, babies crying and traffic noise can
be instantly eradicated from the conversation
with the touch of a button. The other new mic
option, Wide Spectrum, is the polar opposite;
it opens the mic up to every ounce of outside
noise to help place others in your moment.
There are also some new enhancements to
the FaceTime video. Grid View lets you see
every face in your chat room neatly aligned
into a grid, offering equal prominence and this
provides a clear indication of who is speaking
while allowing you to see the instant reactions
of the other callers. Then there is Portrait
Mode, which blurs the background and
naturally puts more focus on you.
To help you schedule your calls, FaceTime
links have been introduced. Now you can
generate a link for your FaceTime call and
share it via Messages, WhatsApp, or even
create an event for it in Calendar. Better still,
FaceTime links are universal – so you can send
one to your Android-owning mates and they’ll
be able to join the conversation too. At last –
Android users will no longer feel left out!
