Step-by-step Choose the right format

Take a shot
In Camera, you can tap on the RAW icon
at the top right (hold the iPhone vertically) or
top left (if you hold it horizontally) to switch
between RAW and .JPG. Snap a shot.

View the format
After taking a picture, go to Photos to
view it. If you shot a RAW file you’ll see a
RAW label in the top-left of the shot. Tap
‘Edit’ to adjust its colours and tones.

Editing RAW
A RAW file stores more information than
a compressed a .JPG. This enables you to
reveal more shadow detail without adding
blocky compression artefacts.

Choose a format
Go to Settings and choose
Camera>Formats. Tap‘Most Compatible’ to
save files in .JPG format. Toggle on ‘Apple
ProRAW’ to shoot in this format too.

Save to iCloud
To save space on your iPhone and sync
your shots to Photos on your Mac and iPad
go to Settings>Photos. Toggle on ‘iCloud
Photos’. Tick ‘Optimise iPhone Storage’.

Save data
It takes lotsof datato upload a RAW file.
Swipe down to tap on ‘Mobile Data’ and turn
it off. Your iPhone’s photos will only upload to
iCloud when itsconnected to Wi-Fi.

Sharing RAW
An edited RAW file’s .DNG format needs
to be converted to a viewable .JPG. This
happens when you tap the Share icon and
choose a destination like Twitter.

Extra control
After syncing images via iCloud you can
edit all formats in macOS Photos. ProRAW
gives you access to extra controls to remove
Luminance and Colour noise.

Exporting RAW
Hold the option/alt key and drag the
thumbnail from Photos to the desktop. This
exports the file as a .DNG that you can work
on in a third–party app.
