hotographers aspire to capture the

perfect moment. However, by the time

they’ve swiped and tapped to get their

iPhone’s Camera app up and running, they

may find that ‘the bird has flown’. Fortunately,

by shooting footage instead of stills, you

can increase the frequency of your photo

opportunities. Since a video clip is a series

of consecutive images, you’ll have hundreds

of shots to choose from. By shooting in 4K

resolution you’ll be able to produce an image

that will look great in your social media stream.

Stills and clips

Turn footage into photos (and vice versa)

4 K and print size
4K footage has a resolution (size) of
3840 x 216 0. If you multiply those
numbers together, you get 8 2944 0.
This means that a 4K clip can produce
a photo that’s the same size as one
produced by an 8 megapixel stills
camera. 8 megapixels is big enough to
produce a highly detailed 10 x 8 inch
photo packed with 300 pixels per inch.

By filming footage at 4K (or UHD)
resolution, you can scrub through
your movie and find a frame that can
be converted into a more aesthetic
and well composed photo.

Add motion

When you pop a still into the timeline,

iMovie gives it a duration of four

seconds and adds a Ken Burns camera

move to it. You can modify the

duration and the move.

Recompose

4K footage is large enough to

be cropped and still produce

a large print. Here, we’ve used

the Crop tool to remove the

photographer’s shadow.

Enhance image

Our unprocessed footage

suffers fromflat tones and

desaturated colours. iMovie

has all the digital darkroom

tools needed to boost contrast

and saturation to create a shot

with more impact.
