hen producing music on any platform,
adding effects like reverb and delay
is an essential part of the mixing
process. Fortunately, Logic ships with a generous
bundle of effects plug-ins, not to mention
the array of third-party AudioUnit plug-ins it
supports. The problem with applying effects
like this is that often you need the same effect
on multiple tracks, but how do you pull this off
without incurring a massive CPU performance
lag? Luckily, Logic’ssignal routing system is based
on that of a real-world, hardware mixing console,
so it features a workaround for this issue in the
form of auxiliary sends. Let’s find out more...

On the buses
A bus is a special pathway down which
a copy of a signal can be sent to a
destination such as a group or an effect
channel. Buses can be mono or stereo
in Logic Pro. You can choose to have
your signal sent down any of the 256
available buses from different points
in the channel, either before or after
the fader.

Balancing act
Use the return channel’s fader
to balance the level of the
effect against the dryversions
of the tracks on the other,
original channels.
Multiple sends
To add an extra send to a
channel, simply click in the
narrow grey area beneath the
last existing send, and the bus
selection popup will appear.
Power saver
Aux sends provide
precise,automatable
control over the amount
of signal sent to the
effect, plus you can send
multiple tracksto the
same instance of a plug-
in, rather than having
multiple instances using a
lot of CPU power.
100 %Mix
When using plug-ins on return channels,
ensure that the wet/dry mix control is set to
100 % wet, as you don’t need to hear any dry
signal on this channel – you already have this
on the originaltrack you’re sending from.
