Restart the Mac

Some people never turn off their Mac,

so it runs for weeks at a time. If apps are

paused or memorywarnings appear, then

restart the Mac to clear apps and memory.

Don’t browse Recents

Browsing the Recents files list in Finder

consumes memory, watch it rise in Activity

Monitor! Go to Finder>Preferences and

select another startup folder to save memory.

Start startup apps

Apps, Safari and Finder use memory

from when you login. To stop this, go to

SystemPreferences>Users& Groups>Login

Items and remove any unnecessary apps.

Install more RAM

Adding more RAM is an obvious solution

to fix your device’s memory issues. To

find out if your Mac is upgradeable, go to

support.apple.com/specs and check.

Check memory usage

If your Mac is slow, is it from a lack of

memory? View the ‘Memory’ tab in Activity

Monitor. You can checkthe memorypressure

chart to see if it has red areas – a bad sign.

Check running apps

Go to the Apple menu and Force Quit to

see running apps. If there are too many, quit

some to free up memory. ‘Paused apps’ due

to lack of memory are labelled in the list here.

it affects its performance. It could slow down,

and in extreme cases apps can be frozen by

macOS with an error message. Don’t worry –

we’ll show you how to tell if the Mac is short of

memory and what can be done about it.

There are a few techniques that help you to

avoid running out of application memory, and

useful ways to deal with it if an app is frozen.

These tips apply to Intel Macs and those with just

4 or 8 GB of memory. However, we have seen 16

GB computers run out of memory when editing

large images in Adobe Lightroom. Memory is a

common issue with photoediting software.
