Unlock the Apple Mac’s
new retro screensaver
Say a huge “hello” to this striking blast from the past that
arrived with macOS 11. 3
W
hen Apple introduced the Macintosh
in 1984, the word “hello” was written
across the screen. With the release
of the M1-powered, 24-inch iMac, Apple has
revived the message in the form of a new
screensaver that draws the greeting in a cursive
font. It’s also available in different languages.
As you can imagine, it’s very cool, yet it’s
not immediately available. To enjoy the new
screensaver, you’re going to have to perform a
small number of actions – none of them tricky,
we’re happy to note. It certainly makes for a fun
homage while also being colourful and modern.
Here’s how to see this treat for yourself. The new ‘hello’ screensaver writes the word on your Mac’s display

You have a few options at your fingertips to make the retro screensaver work for you
Why does my Mac say the screensaver
is already installed?
If you try to import the screensaver, but your Mac says it is
already installed, chances are you won’t have renamed the
‘hello.saver’ file. Renaming this is a vital step in the process,
and it does not matter what you call the new file. It’s also
crucial that you have updated to your Mac to at least macOS
11.3. We found it worked on macOS 11 .4 without any issues.

If you enable Dark Mode on your
Mac, then you’ll likely want to the
screensaver to follow suit and darken
too. Do so by leaving this option ticked.
Decide on the timing
You can tell your Mac when the screen
saver should be displayed. This can be
set to as little as a minute or as much
as an hour. Screensavers can also be
shown with a clock and randomised.
