Step-by-step
Step-by-step Find the hidden “hello” screensaver
4
Copy the screensaver
The file you need to work with is ‘Hello.
saver’. Copy it to your desktop, right-click it,
and select ‘Rename’. For this process to work,
the file must be called something else.
5
Select the file
Once it has a new name, double-click
the icon. You’ll be prompted to install the
screensaver, so click ‘Install’. You’ll need to
enter your system password.
6
Choose ‘hello’
Within seconds, the ‘hello’ screensaver
will be made available to you in the ‘Desktop
& Screen Saver’ section of your System
Preferences. Click to set it as your default.
1
Say hello... maybe
A new ‘hello’ screensaver is now available
as part of macOS 11.3 and later, but non-M1
iMac owners won’t find it by going to System
Preferences>Desktop & Screen Saver.
2
Install the screensaver
You’re going have to manually install
it. The Screensaver has been pre-saved in
a folder on your Mac, so start by clicking
Go>Go to Folder in Finder.
3
Enter the path
To reach the folder, you will need to type
the file path: /System/Library/Screen Savers
into the text window. Press enter on your
keyboard or click ‘Go’ when you’ve done so.
Using Hot Corners
Add hot corners
to your screen
Screensavers make your display look
pretty when you’re away from your computer,
but they’re not actually particularly useful
when it comesto preventing screen burn
on modern displays – they’re a throwback to
the days when we used CRT monitors. Even
so, they remain popular, so perhaps
you should make it easier to start them
by making use of Hot Corners, a function
that will allow you to move your pointer
to a designated corner of the display, and
subsequently have the screensaver spark
into life immediately.
macOS System Preferences
1
Open System Preferences
Launch System Preferences and select
‘Desktop & Screen Saver’. Click ‘Hot Corners’
in the bottom corner. You’ll see four blank
drop-down menus. Choose one of the four
corners and click the drop-down for options.
2
Choose an action
Why not select ‘Start Screen Saver’ for
the top-left corner and ‘Disable Screen Saver’
for the top-right? Then you only need to move
the pointer into either corner. ‘Put Display to
Sleep’, and ‘Lock Screen’ are also useful.
