Choose encryption

Click ‘None’nextto Encryption and

choose either 12 8-bit AES encryption or a more

secure (but slower) 256-bit AES encryption.

Add a strong password and click ‘Choose’.

Select Image Format

Younow need to determine the format

of the disk image: in this instance select

‘read/write’ from the drop-down menu to the

right of Image Format, before clicking ‘Save’.

Create the image

Sit back and let Disk Utility work its magic,

waiting for the blue line to reach the end.

Once the encrypted disk image is created,

click ‘Done’. You can now exit the app.

Use Disk Utility

You don’t need to buy extra software

to encrypt files in macOS. All you need is

Disk Utility. Locate it by going to Finder>

Applications>Utilities and double-click it.

Create an image

We’re going to turn a folder into a

secure,password-protected DMG disk

image file, but don’t feel daunted. Go to

File>New Image>Image From Folder.

Find a folder

Browse your folders. You’re looking

for the one that you’d like to encrypt with a

password and, once you spot it, just click its

icon or name to highlight, and select ‘Choose’.

Opening encrypted files

What can

you do with

an encrypted

folder?

Your encrypted DMG file can be used like

a folder on your computer. You can store it

on your Mac or an external drive. You can

also share it with other people, knowing

that only those who have knowledge of the

password will be able to unlock the goodies

that are contained within it. But how do you

open it and gain access to the contents?

Thankfully, that’s a rather straightforward

process as we are about to see.

macOS Disk Utility

Double-click the image

Double-click the encrypted DMG file. This

will launch a password window and all that’s

needed is the string you inputted prior to the

encryption process. It’s also possible to save

the password to your keychain if you wish.

View the files

The DMG is mounted on your Mac and

appears as a new icon. Double-clicking this

will allow you to view and edit the files inside.

Once finished, close the window and right-

click the mounted disk before selecting ‘Eject’.
