Step-by-step Set up TextSniper

Allow TextSniper

to record

When you first begin using TextSniper on
your Mac, you will be prompted to allow the
app to record your computer’s screen. If you
decline to do this, the app will not work. But
does this mean that the app is dangerous
and could be snooping on other parts of your
display? Simple answer: no. TextSniper says
it doesn’t store screenshots or text, and it
doesn’t send them to outside servers. All
of the functions are carried out locally on
your computer.

You can grab text from images taken on your iPhone and use a host of other options

Open System Preferences

To give TextSniper permission to record

the screen, click ‘Open System Preferences’

when you are prompted. Alternatively, open

System Preferences and go to ‘Security &

Privacy’ before clicking the ‘Privacy’ tab.

Add custom words

TextSniper has built-in language correction,

but if you are capturing text that includes a

lot of jargon, you’ll want to ensure the app

can recognise them for greater accuracy.

Click the app’s icon in the toolbar and select

‘Preferences’. Then click the ‘Custom Words’

tab and enter words separated by a comma.

They’ll automatically save.

Make the change

The apps that want to record your screen

are listed. Click the lock, type in your admin

password to make changes, then tick the box

next to TextSniper. You will be told that the

app needs to close, so click ‘Quit & Reopen’.

Read QR codes

As well as being able

to capture text from an

image, you can highlight

a QR code or a barcode

and have TextSniper

capture,extract and

convert it to text.

Import from an iPhone

If your iPhone or iPad is connected to

your Mac, you can choose to take a

photo, scan a document or create a

sketch and have TextSniper make use

of any words it detects.

Grab text

We found that TextSniper was

even powerful enough tobe

able to grab text from a

chalkboard. It does struggle

with text that has a lot of

symbols, however.

Have the words

read out

When TextSniper

identifies words, you can

have them read out to you

using this option within

the menu.
