The reasoning behind theiPod Shuffle’s creation was that manyiPod users left
their iPods on shuffle anyway, so Appledecided to make a device that offered this
featureat a cheaper price. The Shuffle relied on an ‘autofill’ feature in iTunes that
selected songs atrandomfrom theuser’s music library (or from a specific playlist)
and stuffed as many onto theShuffle as storage allowed. The first-generation iPod
Shuffle could typically hold about240 songs, although you could reduce the bit rate
of songsto 128 kbit/s AACin iTunes toshoehorn in more ofyour favourite ditties.
Lacking the display, trademark clickwheeland additional features andapps of the
larger iPods, the Shuffle consisted of simple playback controls, batteryindicator
light (activated by a button) and a three-position switch to turn the Shuffle on/off
and playmusic in order/shuffled. TheUSB plugis hidden beneath a cap to which
you can attach a lanyardto hang the device around your neck, butthe following
year, the Shuffle would shrink to a microscopic size and clip to yourclothing.
