Bits of Gainesville history added to weekly farmers’ market

Gaines Township’s history
is being featured during a
weekly farmer’s market on
Thursdays this month.
The Gaines Historical
Society used to participate in
annual events, such as
Cutlerville Days and Dutton
Days. But those community
events were canceled for var-
ious reasons, including the
COVID-19 pandemic.
Whether they will return
next year is uncertain.
So Gaines Historical
Society President Shirley
Bruursema said her organi-
zation will make an after-
noon appearance at these
Thursday events to offer col-
orful afghans and pillows
featuring handcrafted images
of some of the township’s
historic buildings. Sales of
these items will help support

the historical society.
The society sets up a table
from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Thursdays at a farmers’ mar-
ket outside Gaines United
Brethren Church, on 92nd
Street SE at Kalamazoo
Avenue.

Some of the highlighted
buildings include the former
one-room Dutton
Schoolhouse on 68th Street
in Dutton, the Cutler House
on 68th Street in Cutlerville,
the Dutton Christian
Reformed Church, the Pine

Rest Chapel and several oth-
ers.
The Gaines Historical
Society also will participate
in the township’s 11th annual

Heritage Festival from 9 a.m.
to 3 p.m. Oct. 9 on the
grounds of Gaines Township
Hall, 8555 Kalamazoo Ave
SE, and at the adjacent

Prairie Wolf Park. That
event, which will include a
farmers’ market, is free to
attend, but the vendors will
accept donations.
