cutting off the hands of thieves, and so forth. I’m
not sure what to think about a society in which
15  percent of people vote for an Islamist party,
but 40  percent or even 60  percent want apostates
killed.^7 If nothing else, that would seem to nudge
the proportion of Islamists a little higher. I’ve
been saying that the number is probably around
20  percent worldwide—an estimate I consider fairly
conservative, whereas Muslim apologists consider
it an outrageous fi ction that testifi es to my bigotry
and paranoia.

Nawaz I think it would be extremely helpful if people
focused on the ideas being discussed here, rather
than on calling you names— which is an easy way
to ignore your ideas. Besides, using Egypt as an ex-
ample, I just estimated the proportion of Islamists
worldwide as slightly below 25  percent (keeping
in mind that the Muslim Brotherhood reached
its peak at 25  percent in Egypt), so I don’t think
you’re that far off the mark. For me, any society in
