cutting off the hands of thieves, and so forth. I’m
not sure what to think about a society in which
15 percent of people vote for an Islamist party,
but 40 percent or even 60 percent want apostates
killed.^7 If nothing else, that would seem to nudge
the proportion of Islamists a little higher. I’ve
been saying that the number is probably around
20 percent worldwide—an estimate I consider fairly
conservative, whereas Muslim apologists consider
it an outrageous fi ction that testifi es to my bigotry
and paranoia.
Nawaz I think it would be extremely helpful if people

than on calling you names— which is an easy way
to ignore your ideas. Besides, using Egypt as an ex-
ample, I just estimated the proportion of Islamists
worldwide as slightly below 25 percent (keeping
in mind that the Muslim Brotherhood reached
its peak at 25 percent in Egypt), so I don’t think
you’re that far off the mark. For me, any society in
- Muslim public opinion on the implementation of shari’ah
has been polled extensively. For instance, http:// www. pew
