Th eTh eLLooccaattioionnGGuuideideThe most northerly and least populatedcounty in England, Northumberland hastraditionally been a place that people catchglimpsesof as they hurtle towards Scotlandon the A1 or East Coast mainline, but rarelystop to explore. For those who do, however, surprises are in store because, scenically andhistorically, Northumberland is hard to beat. The area boasts someof the most beautifulcoastline and countryside in the UK, plusafascinating historyof confl ict and bloodshedthat goes back to the Roman days. Thestretchof coastline running north betweenAmble and Berwick-upon-Tweed is by far themost popular with photographers as it takesin all the best locations in theregion. In Amble itself there isn’t a huge amount toshoot, but if time permits it’s worth a detour tocapture the pier and lighthouse. This is a gooddawn location, but is also idealfor ten-stopND shots, especially on a windy, cloudy day.Next stop isWarkworth – technically it’snot on the coast, but home to a beautifulcastle perched on a small hill overlooking thevillage. For the best viewof the castle, parknear the Post Office and Greenhouse giftshop then take the path alongside the RiverCoquet (turn left when you get to the river)and after afew minutes you’ll come to a bendin the river where you get a great viewof thecastle. There’s usually arefl ectionof it in theNorthNorthumberlandCoast“I first discoveredNorthumberland 20 yearsago, when I wascommissioned to producea book on the area, andloved the place so muchthat I moved north and settled on theNorth Northumberland coast back in2001. Back then the area was little knownto photographers, but inrecent years ithas become somethingof a meccathanks to the predominanceof stunningunspoiled beaches, dramatic castles, clean air, great light and a distinct lackofboth traffic and tourist hoards! HolyIsland is a favourite location because it’sslightly dishevelled and has a lived-infeelabout it, plus there’s a great rangeofsubjects from sweeping views tointimate details, so you can always findsomething to shootregardlessof theweather. Bamburgh Castle is big andimposing, overlooking a stunning sandybeach, while the boulder fieldatEmbleton Bay is a classic view with theruin of Dunstanburgh Castle in thedistance. Alnmouth was my home villagefor years so it holds a special place in myheart. The beach and grassy dunes arewonderful and the Aln Estuary is the bestplaceforsunsetsontheNorthumberlandcoast – most locations are betteratsunrise, being on the east coast.”LeeFrost:“WhyIloveNorthumberland”``````126 Digital SLR PhotographyNove mber2016### 1)HOWICKBATHINGHOUSE:Theperfectcoastalloca tionforadramaticlongexposure–theetherealblurrywaterandjaggedrocksaretheidealcontrast.2)RIVERALN,ALNWICK:AcolourfulandmistymorningbelowAlnwickCastle.3)AMBLE:Theiconicpierisworthashotatbothdawnanddusk.Thisisanotherloca tionideallysuited toalongexposure.4)ALNMOUTH:TheestuaryandChurchHillatlowtide,bathedingoldeneveninglight.5)ALNWICKCASTLE:Thisclassicriversideviewisbestphotographedintheafternoon6)CULLERNOSEPOINT:Basa ltcliffsandarockyforeshoremakeagreat combination.
