big skyviewsWow – look at that sky!Perhaps a littlemore motionwould have been better, butthere’sno denying that this is a superbimage, and David’s editing has maximisedthe drama and moodof the scene.Exposure:246 seconds atf/10 (ISO 200)Howlongshouldyougo?Whenyou’re tryingto capture motion, it’stemptingtouse thelongest exposureyou can. However, differentscenesrequire different exposures, so the ‘longer thebetter’ approach doesn’t alwayswork. On a windy day,for example, 60 seconds may be more than enoughtorecord motion, and ifyou open the shutterfor longeryoumay find that the sky blurs so much thatyou lose a senseof drama.Conversely, if there’slittle wind and the skylacks drama, you’ll probably need an exposureof severalminutesto record sufficient motion. Thekey is toexperiment – start with a shorter exposure then increaseif necessary. You can achieve a longer exposurebystopping thelens down – go one stop smaller (f/8to f/11,f/11 to f/16) and the exposure doubles, open up a stop(f/16to f/11,f/11 to f/8) and it halves.
