Anonymity
this is a classic pose—the reclining
nude. Anonymous poses such as
this create a more allegorical feel—the
model can represent “Woman” or
“Beauty” more easily than an
identifiable character. this pose
evokes a warmly human atmosphere,
and is very easy for the model to hold.
it is also a gift to the photographer—
you can move around your model,
carefully choosing the best distance
and angle from which to shoot.
Frank crouching
standing poses can be difficult,
especially if your subject is new
to modelling—he or she may feel
awkward and unsure of what to
do. sitting, kneeling, or crouching
positions give a sense of reality and
approachability, with the model more
in touch with his or her body. the
poses can also produce interesting
shapes and make the composition

We all use them all the time, but
mostly subconsciously. it can be quite
difficult to “pose” a model’s hands, so
often i suggest that models imagine
being in a specific state of mind and
