180 CHAPTER FOURTEEN
14–9 Roofing
Roofingis considered to include all the material that actually
covers the roof deck. It includes any felt (or papers) as well as
bituminous materials that may be placed over the deck.
These are commonly installed by the roofing subcontractor
and included in that portion of the work. Flashing required
on the roof, at wall intersections, joints around protrusions
through the roof, and the like are also included in the roof-
ing takeoff. Miscellaneous items such as fiber blocking, cant
strips, curbs, and expansion joints should also be included.
The sections and details, as well as the specifications, must
be studied carefully to determine what is required and how it
must be installed.
14–10 Roof Areas
In estimating the square footage of the area to be roofed,
estimators must consider the shape of the roof (Figure 14.9).
When measuring a flat roof with no overhang or with para-
pet walls, they take the measurements of the building from
the outside of the walls. This method is used for parapet
walls because it allows for the turning up of the roofing on
the sides of the walls. If the roof projects beyond the building
walls, the dimensions used must be the overall outside
dimensions of the roof and must include the overhang. The
drawings should be carefully checked to determine the
roofline around the building, as well as where and how
much overhang there may be. The floor plans, wall sections,
