In the previous examples, it was assumed that the finish
grade was the point at which the earthwork took place; how-
ever, this is typically not true. In Figure 9.17, the planned
contour lines on the parking lot represent the top of the


asphalt. Therefore, the rough grading will be at an elevation
different from the one shown on the site plan. In this sce-
nario, the elevation for the rough grading needs to be
reduced by the thickness of the asphalt and base material.
