CHAPTER 2

The Hidden Laws Behind Sickness and Health

Disease Is Unnatural

he main conclusion we can draw from the study of health and healing is that a natural way of living
can prevent disease from arising. Illness results when we deviate from this way of life. It manifests
itself when the body tries to neutralize and eliminate accumulated harmful substances and fluids. To
restore health, we need to assist the body in removing these toxins; a nutritious diet and a natural program
of health care will prevent them from accumulating again.
Disease is the occurrence of a toxicity crisis, which is the body’s attempt to return to a balanced
condition called homeostasis. This healing or toxicity crisis occurs when toxins in the body have reached
a certain level of concentration, which, in this context, I refer to as “tolerance.” I consider toxins to be
internally produced or externally supplied substances that have deleterious effects on the body's organ
systems, individual organs, tissues, cells, and subcellular units. Toxins may include chemical food
additives, environmental pollutants, trapped metabolic waste products, and poisons generated by bacteria
that decompose undigested foods in the gut. Once the body's tolerance level for toxins has been reached, it
signals pain or other forms of discomfort. This stimulates the organs and systems of elimination, such as
the skin, respiratory system, liver, large intestine, kidneys, lymphatic system and the immune system into
defensive action. The liver, lungs, colon, kidneys, skin and lymphatic glands may temporarily become
congested as the body tries to remove these toxins. The immune response may include the mobilization of
immune cells and antibodies that help to reduce the level of toxicity to below the limit of tolerance (see
illustration 3 ). During this reactive stage of the toxicity crisis you may feel weak or worn out because the
body utilizes every ounce of energy it can get to clear itself of the toxins. Under normal circumstances,
physical strength, appetite and good mood will begin to return several days after this healing response.
This may give you the impression that your health is back to normal, whereas in many cases you may
only have passed the symptom level of the toxicity crisis.
Unless you eliminate the factors that have led to their buildup, the toxins are likely to accumulate
again and cause another toxicity crisis. Since the immune system becomes progressively weaker with
each new crisis, the likelihood of fully recovering one's health and vitality diminishes, too. The final
outcome of repeated cycles of toxicity crises is chronic illness.
Over one hundred years ago, chronic diseases were, indeed, quite rare. At the beginning of the 20th
century, only 10 out of 100 people suffered an ongoing illness. Today, chronic diseases make up over 90
percent of all health problems. Nowadays, the general population and doctors alike tend to believe that it
is both correct and beneficial to get rid of the symptoms of a disease by any means possible. In most
cases, the methods used consist of drugs and surgery. Although their application conveniently bypasses
the need to detect and attend to the causes of these symptoms, which are simply indicators of toxicity in
