Middleville council Oks

bridge inspections
Greg Chandler
Staff Writer
The East Main Street
bridge over the Thornapple
River and two bridges on
Crane Road will undergo
inspection this fall.
The Middleville Village
Council Tuesday approved a
contract for the engineering
firm Williams and Works to
conduct the inspections at a
cost of $8,600.
Bridge inspections are
required every two years by
the Michigan Department of
Transportation.
Village Manager Patricia
Rayl reported to council that
the inspection for the East
Main bridge needs to be
completed by the end of
October. Williams and Works
quoted a price for $4,200 for
the East Main inspection. But
the company also offered a
quote to include the Crane
Road bridges – one over the
Thornapple and another over
Spring Creek and nearby
wetlands – along with the

East Main bridge for the
$8,600 fee.
“We could indeed save
some money by having them
all done at the same time, and
get them on the same
[inspection] cycle,” Rayl
said.
The East Main bridge was
built in 2015 and was last
inspected in 2019. The Crane
Road bridges were built in
2010 as part of a federally
funded extension of the road
to the east to connect M-
with Bradford White
Corporation. Those bridges
were last inspected in 2018,
according to village
documents.
The project includes a site
visit, visual inspection of the
bridges and submittal of
documentation to the
MiBridge bridge management
system on MDOT’s website,
according to the proposal
letter from Williams and
Works engineering Jordan
Pelphrey.
