The value of a fraction like 1 2 2 is unchanged if the numerator and the denominator


are both multiplied by the same number:


and the general method of adding fractions is (a) find a common denominator for


the fractions to be added, (b) express all the fractions in terms of this common


denominator, (c) add.

A common denominator is 31 × 151 = 115. Then

A common denominator is 41 × 161 = 124 , but the lowest (smallest) common


denominator is 12:
