13420 S Hwy 101; tastings $5;
h11am-6pm). There the
expert proprietor pours
hand-picked flights that
include rare vintages you
might not even taste at
the wineries themselves.

The Drive » Head north
on Hwy 101 about 10 minutes
before exiting on Hwy 253, a
beautiful, serpentine route
through the hills. Hwy 253
ends at Hwy 128, just south of
Boonville.

2 Boonville
Descending from the
hills, visitors spill out into

the sun-washed village of
Boonville, a short main
street with historical
buildings, boutiques
and artisanal ice cream.
Still, the town’s most
famous taste is just a bit
down the street at the
Anderson Valley Brewing
Company (www.avbc.com;

17700 Hwy 253; (^) h11am-7pm).
The brewery sits on a big
corner lot overlooking
the valley, and the
grounds are complete
with a sparely furnished
tasting room, a copper-
clad brewery and beefy
draft horses that graze
the grounds. The place
also includes a Frisbee
golf course, where players
can buy beer to drink as
they play. The brewery’s
long-standing green
credentials include a solar
array that generates a
sizeable amount of its
power.

The Drive » Drive just north
out of town on Hwy 128, passing
a number of family wineries
and fruit stands. The best fruit
is ahead, in Philo, only 6 miles
north of Boonville.
3 Philo
The gorgeous Philo Apple
Farm (www.philoapplefarm.
com; 18501 Greenwood Rd;
hdawn-dusk) is a bit
like something out of a
storybook: a dreamy patch
of green run by warm-
hearted staff and scented
with apple blossoms. It’s
worth skipping over the
other farm stands on the
way here for their organic
preserves, chutneys,
heirloom apples and pears.
(If you get here after
hours, you’re likely to be
able to leave a few dollars
in a jar and take some
goodies along for the ride.)
Those who linger can take
cooking classes with some
of the Wine Country’s
best chefs. For a swim, the
rocky, shallow waters of
the Navarro River are just
a short stroll up the road.
