com; 241 Main St; r $129-250; (^) W) The rooms
have antique furnishings and open floor plans.
Guests are greeted with fresh flowers and can
drift to sleep on feather beds after soaking in
claw-foot tubs. Certainly the best hotel in the
northern mountains, with a perfect marriage of
preservationist class and modern panache.
Mt Shasta 7
5 Mount Shasta Pastry Bakery $
(610 S Mt Shasta Blvd; mains $17-28; (^) h6am-
2:30pm Mon-Sat, 7am-1pm Sun) Walk in hungry
and you’ll be plagued with an existential
breakfast crisis: the potato and egg frittata
topped with red peppers, ham and melted
cheese, or the smoky breakfast burrito? The
flaky croissants or peach cobbler?

$89-139; aW) Owned by the same folks who
have the Strawberry Valley Inn across the
street, the cluster of renovated mid-century
buildings that make up the Woodsman is the
mannish alternative. Taxidermy looks over the
reception area, where a fire keeps things warm
in the winter.
Stewart Mineral Springs 6
