meals $10-25; h11am-9pm) Hands down the
fi nest in Chester, the upscale New American
cuisine has generous Italian infl uences (like
the simply prepared rock shrimp and crab
Alfredo) and there’s bar food with panache.
The setting is cozy with wall lanterns and a
crackling fi re.

(USFS) campgrounds in the area is 2 miles
north of Bassetts on Gold Lake Hwy. It has
vault toilets, running water and fi rst-come,
fi rst-served sites.

5 Big Springs Gardens Brunch $$$

summer, reservations required) This private
botanical garden makes for an enjoyable stroll
when the weather is warm, but the best time to
visit is for their special brunch. Dine on berries
from the surrounding hills and trout fresh
from the pond, served alfresco. Trails pass a
waterfall-laced natural area.

4 Buttes Resort Cabin $

com; 230 Main St; cabins $55-145) In the heart of
Sierra City, the small cluster of cabins occupies
a lovely spot overlooking the river and is a
favorite with hikers. Most cabins have a private
deck and barbecue; some have full kitchens.

of camping areas east of Sierra City, this is the
most scenic, along a rushing stretch of the river.
The facilities – vault toilets and fi rst-come, fi rst-
served sites – are basic but clean.
