TRANSPORT •• Getting Around lonelyplanet.com

THAILAND
From western Peninsular Malaysia, you can
travel by bus from Alor Setar to the border
crossing at Bukit Kayu Hitam ( p469 ) and on
to the transit town of Hat Yai in Thailand,
via Sadao. There are trains passing through
Alor Setar to Padang Besar and then con-
tinuing north into Thailand (see p469 ).
Though there is a border crossing at
Rantau Panjang on the eastern peninsula
that is geographically convenient to Kota
Bharu, all travel through this section of
southern Thailand should be avoided until
the security situation vastly improves; see
p485 for border-crossing information.
There is also a border crossing between
Keroh (Malaysia) and Betong (Thailand),
but at the time of writing it was inadvisable
to travel here due to the violence in Yala
Province, Thailand (see p805 ).

Sea
There are no services connecting the penin-
sula with Malaysian Borneo.

BRUNEI
Boats connect Brunei to Lawas and Limbang
in Sarawak, and to Pulau Labuan, from
where boats go to Sabah. With the exception
of speedboats for Limbang, all international
boats depart from Muara, 25km northeast of
Bandar Seri Begawan.
See p53 for more information and details
on boat services.

INDONESIA
The following are the main ferry routes
between Indonesia and Malaysia:

(^)  Pulau Bengkalis, Sumatra to Melaka (see
p455 )
(^)  Dumai, Sumatra to Melaka (see p455 )
(^)  Medan, Sumatra to Pulau Penang (see
p467 )
(^)  Pekanbaru, Sumatra to Melaka (see
p455 )
 Tanjung Pinang on Pulau Bintan (Riau
Islands) to JB ( p472 )
 Pulau Batam (Riau Islands) to JB ( p472 )
 Tarakan, Kalimantan to Tawau (see
p320 ).
THAILAND
Regular ferries run between Pulau Langkawi
and Satun in Thailand and to Ko Lipe in
Thailand with onward service as far as Ko
Lanta (see p471 ).
