PC Hardware A Beginner’s Guide

(ff) #1

The Settings for the Video Card Are Not Listed

in the Windows Display Settings

If you have tried to change the Deskto psettings in Windows to reflect a new video card
but only 640 × 480 and 16 colors are available, it is likely that the video card’s software
drivers are not installed or need to be reinstalled.

  1. To check on which video device drivers are installed, open the Device Manager. To
see which video driver you have currently installed, right-click on My Computer
    and select Properties.

  2. Click on the Device Manager tab and find the video card entry. If the video
card is a PCI card, you may need to drill down to it through the Plug and
Play devices and the PCI bus entries. Once you have located it, if it is listed
as Standard VGA, you need to install the device drivers for the video card.

  3. To install the device drivers, use the disk or CD-ROM that came with your
video card. If it doesn’t start up by itself (which means, if it is a diskette), use
the Add Hardware icon on the Control Panel to install the video card and its
drivers. Be sure you click the Have Disk button when asked for the location
of the drivers. If you can avoid it, never (repeat: never) use the driver from
the Windows library when you have a disk.
