DRAWING VESSELS

Once you have mastered drawing free-hand springs, you can start

to control your spinning ellipse to make a vessel.

A Single Vessel

Seeing Through
Allow lines to travel around each vessel as if it
were transparent. Altering the pressure—and
therefore tone—of the line as it spins gives the
impression of light shining on one side.

One Inside Another

Grouped Together

Create a Solid Surface
Once you have drawn the shape and volume of
each form, you can make it solid by building up
highlights and tones on visible surfaces, thereby
hiding lines that show the other sides.

Finding Shape and Volume
Draw an imagined vessel in one continuous
spinning line. Draw quickly, working from top to
bottom, enlarging and diminishing the ellipse to
determine the overall shape and volume.
