PLACE AND MOMENT
The heat and teeming
atmosphere of this Parisian
dressing room, left, lives on,
more than 100 years after its
making. Lautrec's flamboyant
splashes of petticoats and
pantaloons are drawn with
long sweeps of chalk and
brushed oil paint. He dazzles
us with flashes of light and
dabbed marks of shadow,
which evoke realities of place
and the power of moment.

RIB-CAGE DRAMA
Thus drama, right is set inside a
rib cage, one of many luminous
works in watercolor, acrylic,
pastel, gold leaf and spray
paint, made by a young British
artist who creates alphabets
of the absurd from familiar
childhood characters. Walter
also makes books: some, like
folded insects, stand table-sized
with furniture legs attached to
both sides of their jacket.
